Over 100,000 Books in the New Israeli Book Catalog. The automated catalog will be published by the Israeli Center for Libraries and will soon be launched on the Internet

The Israeli Center for Libraries will be launching the National Israeli Book Catalog at a festive event that will take place during the MultiYeda information science conference in March. The catalog is comprised of over 100,000 books that have been published in Hebrew during the last few decades. In addition to standard details about each item, the catalog includes additional information such as tags, keywords, and extensive information about the book and the author.

The catalog includes thirty thousand scanned images of book covers. Every book published since last year includes a full scan of the cover.

The new catalog is built on cutting edge technology using IDEA@Lib, developed by IDEA Information Systems – one of the leading providers of library systems. New applications and usage of Web 2.0 tools were developed especially for the catalog, including user reviews, recommendations and rankings, and creation of a user basket.

The catalog will serve all the libraries in Israel, and will soon be available on-line at the new book and library site that is being established to serve book lovers and public libraries throughout Israel. The catalog will be open to the public for free, and some of the extra catalog services are for purchase.

Shmuel Shem Tov, director of the Israeli Center for Libraries, stated: “A large investment of funds and development work went into creating the most comprehensive and advanced catalog to serve the public. We invested in IDEA Information Systems’ advanced technology and we are sure that readers will reap many benefits from the new catalog.” Anna Sela is heading the project at the Israeli Center for Libraries.

Mr. Gil Lin, CEO of IDEA Information Systems said: “IDEA has been operating in the library world for many years. However, we did not take this project for granted. We are proud to have the honor of cooperating with the Israeli Center for Libraries, which is the leading authority in the library field in Israel. This is the most important catalog in the library field in Israel and now, with the new Internet site, it will be available to readers everywhere.”
